Golf is also fun in winter
It doesn't always have to be the south. Nowadays, you can also improve your game with winter golf in rainy weather and sub-zero temperatures at home. Local golf courses offer everything your heart desires in the cold, dreary winter months: heated and covered outdoor tee boxes, indoor halls with teeing grounds for long clubs, indoor greens for putting, chipping and pitching as well as golf simulators.
If the winter is not too harsh, the driving ranges and courses at many courses remain open for winter golf. Only when there is snow and ground frost is it not possible to play a round. If the temperature is below freezing, the summer greens are not played on, but it is still possible to play when it is slightly colder. The operators often offer small winter greens on the fairways. Although this shortens the fairways, it also reduces the playing fee.
Advices & tricks for winter golf
a passionate golfer is not put off by bad weather. However, to ensure that the ball flies as desired even in adverse conditions, there are various aspects that are more important than when the sun is shining. Above all, the right clothing is important for winter golf. There is no getting around a suitable glove. When it's cold, you lose dexterity. Only with warm and dry hands can you tee off successfully.
When it comes to equipment, further preparation is advisable. For example, the golf ball changes its flight characteristics in cold weather and simply does not fly as far as in warm temperatures. If the golf ball cannot be warmed up sufficiently in your trouser pocket, you can choose between a softer ball or a longer club. Both options allow the round to glide through the air as if it were in bright sunshine. It is also logical that it becomes more difficult to place the tee upright when the ground is frozen. Special winter tees that can simply be placed on the floor can help.
In addition, the muscles get rusty in dirty weather. A short warm-up can work wonders, as can a small snack before or during winter golf. When it's cold, the body uses more energy.
Winter golf: clothing and shoes
When it comes to winter golf, the shoes make the biggest difference. Although it is possible to wear normal golf shoes in winter, they should be waterproof. Otherwise, it is advisable to buy special shoes with special protection against water and cold and a lightweight outsole for durability. Alternatively, you can even consider golf shoes with spikes. They ensure optimum grip even on muddy surfaces. If it gets cold in winter, you need to prevent freezing. Experienced winter golfers advocate different layers of clothing that provide optimum protection against the cold. The combination of a thermal shirt for warmth and ventilation, a longsleeve on top and another fabric jacket as a third layer offer maximum warmth with optimum freedom of movement. If it is particularly cold, a vest or jacket can be worn over the top.
